The Muscat Municipality has been investigating safety complaints from residents of old buildings and issuing directives to demolish or renovate unsafe structures in Oman’s capital, it was reported.

“Officials will inspect old buildings and those not complying with safety regulations will have to face the consequences,” said a municipality official, quoted in The Times of Oman.

“Muscat Municipality has ordered some building owners to demolish old buildings or renovate them to ensure that they meet with the required safety standards,” the official added.

The authority has also recently begun demolishing old government and privately-owned buildings in the Ruwi area of Muscat, with 27 buildings taken down so far, it was reported.

The buildings will be replaced by new, government-owned residential complexes, it was reported.
