Dhi Qar, a southern governorate in Iraq suspended work on a $217mn (IQ253mn) sewage project, after investigations revealed the contractor had committed offences during the the work process.
Hilal Al Sahlani, the province’s governor said the governorate’s council had, following complaints about debris and damaged drinking water pipes from the area’s residents, notified the local municipality and public works department to freeze the Grand Sewage project in Nasirriyah.
“We decided to suspend work on this important project due to many technical errors committed by the contracting company during execution,” Sahlani said.
“The company started excavation work in residential areas before constructing any pipes or depots,” he added. “It also failed to remove debris in residential areas and tackle damage it has caused to drinking water pipes in those areas.”
Sahlani refused to reveal the company involved in the incident, only saying it ‘does not have a clear execution plan’, reported the Iraqi news network Al-Sumaria.
