Tadweer recycles 1.9 millions tons of construction and demolition waste in 2020
Recycled material produced comprised high-quality aggregate for construction of strategic projects
Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) recycled 1,915,724 tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in Abu Dhabi in 2020, accounting for 80% of the total C&D waste it handled in the year.
According to a statement by Tadweer, the total tonnage of recycled waste is equivalent to 255 domes of the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi. The emirate of Abu Dhabi also accounted for 2,400,000t or 32% of the C&D waste that Tadweer handled in 2020.
Tadweer added that in order to reduce waste resulting from C&D activities across the emirate, it is implementing various programmes to enhance its recycling capabilities in accordance with the highest local and international standards. This aligns with the Abu Dhabi Executive Council’s decision that mandates the use of at least 40% of recycled materials in road and construction projects across the emirate’s three regions.
Tadweer added that its C&D recycling facilities can produce four different sizes of recycled aggregate, measuring 0mm to 37.5mm, as well as treated sand. These materials are used in the construction of roads and vital infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi, including Etihad Rail, Khalifa Port, Abu Dhabi Airports, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Museum, Saadiyat Island, Ghweifat International Highway and ADNOC’s oil fields, among others.
Abdulmohsin Alkatheeri, acting director of Projects and Facilities Department at Tadweer, said: “In line with Tadweer’s strategic goal of promoting integrated waste management, the Centre has stepped up efforts to achieve the optimal utilisation of waste. Such efforts help us ensure the preservation of natural resources and keep Abu Dhabi’s environment clean, safe and sustainable. Through promoting efficient C&D waste recycling and treatment, we aim to promote the use of recycled aggravate in the construction of strategic projects to support the national economy and accelerate sustainable development.”
Tadweer said that between 2016 and 2020, it produced 11 million tons of recycled aggravate from C&D waste, equivalent to a 4,200km linear street, which is similar to the construction of three streets stretching along the UAE’s coast. In this same period, the Centre’s facilities handled an average of 212,000t per month of demolition and construction waste, with a maximum of 334,629t in a month, and a minimum of 147,887t.
Earlier this year, Tadweer re-opened the Ghayathi Crusher in the Al Dhafra region after its refurbishment. With a daily capacity of 2,000t of C&D waste, the facility plays a crucial role in achieving the emirate’s environmental goals and developing integrated waste management, the statement added.
