Al Maryah Central mall structure completed

Gulf Related says Abu Dhabi destination is on track to open in 2018, after topping out of project

Gulf Related has announced that its flagship project, Al Maryah Central, has achieved structural completion and topping out.

Remaining construction works continue at full pace, the regional real estate development company said.

Situated on Al Maryah Island, the 2.8 million sq ft retail destination is scheduled to open in 2018.

It will be home to the first Macy’s department store outside the United States, as well as the first Bloomingdale’s in Abu Dhabi. It will combine with The Galleria, a luxury retail destination located opposite its site.

“The topping out milestone highlights the rapid progress we have made since construction began in August of 2015. Al Maryah Central, together with The Galleria, will deliver a new kind of retail experience in Abu Dhabi, offering a cosmopolitan mix of shopping, dining and entertainment on par with the world’s greatest cities,” said Kevin Ryan, chief operating manager and managing director of Gulf Related.

A number of high profile retailers will also be located in the mall, including a 35,000 sq ft Zara store and a 21-screen Vox Cinemas with IMAX. Al Tayer Group, Dubai Holding Group, Majid Al Futtaim Group, Chalhoub Group and other local retailers have also signed leasing agreements with the mall.

“This milestone serves as a testament to the hard work and collaboration between Multiplex, Gulf Related and our partners to deliver a world-class shopping destination in Abu Dhabi,” said Marcus Truscott, managing director of Multiplex, the contractor building the project.

“Al Maryah Central is a truly forward-thinking and innovative development that will only enhance the Capital’s retail, dining and entertainment sector with its unique offering. We look forward to continuing to work with Gulf Related to ensure the project’s successful completion in 2018.”

The mall’s structure includes a 185,000 meter-cubed concrete frame poured in situ. Approximately 15 million man hours have been dedicated to this achievement to-date, the contractor added in the statement.
