Saudi to award construction contracts for 871 schools

Ministry of Education currently has 2,340 school projects worth $5.6bn under construction

The Saudi government is set to award contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to build 871 new school buildings in various parts of the Kingdom.
The Ministry of Education currently has 2,340 school projects under construction at a total cost of $5.6bn, as part of national strategy to reduce the number of rented school buildings.
The new projects are expected to increase the share of school buildings owned by the government to 85%, said Fahd Al-Hammad, supervisor of the agency for school buildings.
The Kingdom’s 2011 budget allocated 46% of total spending to education and training, health and social development, and infrastructure, with 25.9% of the entire budget designated for education and training alone.
The budget includes plans to build 610 new schools in addition to the 3,200 already under construction. In 2010, the Kingdom completed the construction of 600 schools.
