UAE construction sites have been failing to adhere to on-site safety regulations, it has been found, with the latest incident resulting in the death of a construction worker onsite.

Meanwhile, scores of labourers are reported to be suffering eye injuries because they do not wear safety goggles, a requirement of Decree 42 of UAE’s law, local media have said.

A 43-year-old labourer recently passed away in Sharjah’s Al Mamzar area after falling from an under-construction building, as per a recent report by Gulf News.

According to a police official, the worker fell to the ground after losing his balance. “The labourer was not wearing a safety helmet which led to a severe head injury and death. Wearing a safety harness while operating at height is another mandatory requirement as per the law.

“Construction companies are held responsible for negligence as they must ensure labourers strictly adhere to safety rules and regulations,” the official added, urging all construction companies to follow safety measures.

Late last year, a fire at an under-construction building in Dubai, near the emirate’s Dubai Sports’ City, claimed one life, when nearly 300 workers climbed down the access ropes, crane and scaffolding in an attempt to save their lives.
