Qatar is expected to invite tenders for almost 10 new projects this year in relation with the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
After a 21% growth in its project market for 2013, the country’s new deals could be worth $140bn – $150bn this year, most of which are likely to be in preparation for hosting the global football event.
“We are in the advanced stages of design work for six stadiums and this year we will see five stadiums begin the early works on foundations and construction,” said Yasser al-Mulla, project manager at Al-Rayyan Precinct for Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.
Al-Mulla added the country could issue up to 10 tenders this year for project managers and design consultants to work on the stadia being constructed for the games. Doha, it is believed, will spend an additional $4bn on building the necessary infrastructure for the world cup.
Additionally, the country’s public works authority, Ashgal, revealed its plans to launch an expressway worth $27.5bn, with other interchange projects over the next five years. These projects are expected to supplement the $3bn-worth contracts awarded last year, with the road projects due for completion in 2020, said a report by local daily Gulf Times.
