Bahrain gears up for completion of world’s largest aluminium smelter

Aluminium Bahrain spread across an area of 3.5 sq. km had hit 50% milestone on the Line 6 project in May 2019

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has announced that it is gearing up to become the world’s largest aluminium smelter as Line 6 Expansion Project nears completion, according to Alba chairman, Shaikh Daij bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa.

Alba is now amongst the 1 million-metric tonne smelters in the world, upon completion in 2019, the Line 6 Expansion Project will boost Alba’s per-annum production by 540,000 metric tonnes, bringing Alba’s total production capacity to 1.5 million metric tonnes per year.

As of 30 June 2019, Line 6 Smelter’s Overall Progress advanced by 96% (Engineering advanced by 99.97% while Contracts and Procurement by 98.95%); Power Station 5 & Power Distribution System Overall Progress exceeded 95% and by over 99% respectively, as reported on its official website.

In the statement, issued during Alba’s third quarterly board meeting held at Alba in September, Shaikh Daij stated: “I congratulate all Alba employees and contractors as we have made history by achieving an outstanding safety milestone of more than 11 million working-hours without lost time injury (LTI). This safety score endorses our overarching objective of ‘Think Safety First and Always’.”

The board also approved the appointment of Bryan Harris as the chief financial officer and  Khalid Turani as the chief internal audit and risk officer, the statement added.
