The UAE’s Ministry of Labour has launched a new programme aimed at improving road safety amongst pedestrians in the country, with special focus on construction workers.
During a ceremony held earlier this week at the Ministry headquarters, Juma Bin Sweidan, director of events management at Dubai Police, and Essa Al-Zarouni, director of the inspection department at the Ministry’s office announced they would shortly launch the campaign, under the slogan ‘Cross Safely’.
“The ministry will activate its union care mobile unit, which was launched by the Ministry of Labour during the celebration of the international Labour Day in 2012,” said Al Zarouni. “These are designed to deliver safety campaigns to labour camp areas to spread awareness among these workers, by distributing images and brochures.”
The Ministry will work with the Dubai Police, by providing the latter ‘with addresses and data of all facilities registered within the ministry’s system, specifically the ones that employ 1000-plus workers’, said a report by WAM.
Each mobile unit will be 19m long, containing a lecture hall with a capacity of up to 40 people, a 52” plasma screen, projectors and other equipment to appropriately educate labourers about the perils of jaywalking.
“The campaign will continue until the end of this year, with three campaigns to take place in Muhaisnah 2 and another three in Al Quoz, and three campaigns in Jebel Ali,” said Bin Sweidan.
Labourers have previously benefited from such lectures organised by the Dubai Police, said Bin Sweidan, adding such measures are being undertaken to reduce run-over accidents to 0% in the future.
