Dubai Metro’s 23km Green Line will be inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in September, more than a year after it was first intended to operate.

The line was originally intended to open in April 2010, before being pushed back to August 2011. Despite the inauguration now being scheduled for September 2011, the Al Jadaf and Creek stations – which are said to be ready for operation – will be delayed further due to incomplete property projects.

The new green will serve a “dynamic and high-density commercial, government and residential areas”, according to RTA chairman Mattar Al Tayer; including the Airport Free Zone and Al Qusais near Emirates Road, Palm Deira Station, Oud Metha and Dubai Healthcare City.

With 8km of track underground, the new line will have 18 stations with 12 elevated and six underground.

Trains will run at the same frequency as the red line; with 13 per hour during peak times and 10 per hour at other periods. It is expected 22,000 passengers per hour will use the line, which runs through the densely populated “old Dubai” areas.

It was announced in March that the RTA would cut the number of trains in operation and review maintenance processes to save US $2.04m.
