India’s L&T wins $600m road project in Qatar
Mega-project largest ever for L&T outside India
Indian contractors Larsen & Tourbro has won a $600 million (2.187bn Qatari Riyal) road project in Qatar, the Al Wakrah Bypass, the largest ever single road contract outside of India for L&T.
The contract win followed on from another successful bid earlier in the month in Oman, where L&T have been contracted to widen the existing 76km road between Bidbid and Sur, a project worth $252.3m.
In Qatar, ASHGAL awarded the design and construction contract to L&T, with the project scheduled to be completed in 62 months.
The scope of work involves construction of 11km of road, consisting of 10 lanes and four future lane sections with additional collectors roads, frontage roads and ramps.
The freeway will provide access to the existing and planned developments via five major interchanges comprising of 20 bridges, 13 bicycle overpasses, eight vehicular underpasses and three pedestrian bridges.
The contract also has requirments for utility works, including potable water, sewerage, irrigation and landscaping.
Al Wakrah Bypass is a major South – North freeway connecting the existing Al Wakrah – Mesaieed Road. This new freeway will be a continuation of an existing major urban North – South high speed corridor of Doha Expressway.
