Egypt completes $192m rehabilitation work on 831km-long canals network

Minister adds that funding for the project has so far exceeded $256m and that an increase in funding is being studied

Hala El Said, Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, has announced that rehabilitation and lining work has been completed on 831-kilometre-long canals in various governorates in January, at a total investment of $192 million.

Local media added that the minister said that funding available for the project has so far exceeded $256.4 million and that an increase in funding is being studied in light of implementation rates.

Reports said that a delegation of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, headed by Dr Jamil Helmy, Assistant Minister for the follow-up of the sustainable development plan, and Mohamed Farid, Assistant Minister for National Projects, inspected several canal rehabilitation and lining projects in Minya Governorate.

In addition, the delegation also inspected work on the 7.9-km-long Dussot canal rehabilitation project, which is nearly 45% complete.

Dr Helmy pointed out that the scope of work in Minya governorate includes rehabilitation and lining of 104 canals running 400 km long at an investment of $70.48 million.

“Of this, the lining and rehabilitation of 100 km have already been completed,” he concluded.
