Bahrain to build new $222mn exhibition centre
Project is expected to consolidate the Kingdom’s status as a leading tourism and commercial destination
A $222 million deal has been inked by Bahraini authorities for the construction of a new exhibition centre in Sakhir. The 308,000sqm Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre is to be built on a 1.3 million sqm plot and is expected to be handed over mid-way through 2022.
The contract was signed by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf and Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed bin Rashid Al-Zayani with Cebarco Bahrain Chairman Khalid Abdulrahim, a Bahrain News Agency report said.
The new exhibition centre will take shape near the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir and will be five times bigger than the current exhibition cenitre in Sanabis, the minister said. He also added that the project will be the largest of its kind in the region.
The Works Minister remarked that the project will serve the exhibitions sector, and develop the national economy, as it will create more jobs and attract more investments to the kingdom.
Speaking about the facilities of the new exhibition centre, he pointed out that it will include 10 exhibition halls with a total area of 95,000sqm, along with all the necessary services, in addition to areas dedicated for retail and events. The facility is also expected to feature a 4,500sqm conference hall in addition to 27 small and medium conference and meeting rooms with a total area of about 1,700sqm. The centre will also boast two majlises for VIPs.
The new exhibition and convention centre was designed and will be supervised by KG & Tilke, who also designed and oversaw the implementation of the Bahrain International Circuit.
