Fairgreen International School calls for volunteers from regional construction consultancies
The educational institution is Dubai’s first Design Engineer Construct! school
Dubai-based Fairgreen International School is asking for volunteers from regional construction consultancies to join its ‘meet the professional’s day’, at its campus on November 4 from 1pm to 3.15pm. The event aims to give Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) students a better understanding of roles within construction teams, as part of the DEC Level 1 curriculum.
DEC is a foundation programme launched by UK-based Class Of Your Own (COYO) for secondary school learners looking to explore professional practice in the digital built environment.
Fairgreen teachers Samuel Landete and Aimee Thomas are coordinating ‘speed dating’ sessions, which will start at 1:15pm on November 4 – there will be two rotations. For further information and to confirm availability for the sessions, please email slandete@fairgreen.ae.
“Fairgreen International School has launched the Design, Engineer… Construct! program and we will be hosting a speed-interview session between students and professionals in relevant roles of the building industry on November 4,” explained Landete.
According to COYO, students are tasked to digitally design (engineer and construct!) a small, community focused ‘Eco Classroom’ – a highly sustainable and inclusive building that offers flexible use for diverse groups – with a brief to teach local communities about everyday eco-friendly living.
Grade 9 and 10 students wish to investigate the range of professional roles in the built environment and the contribution they make to a sustainable construction project. Students need to link roles to responsibilities and identify how each team member contributes to the ongoing sustainability of the project, states COYO.
The firm notes, going forward, students will discover how positive behaviour and excellent governance practices impact the lifecycle of their own projects. For example, they may agree to limit the use of paper, encourage the team to car share when site visits are necessary and hold team meetings by Skype. Further, they might commit to a range of energy efficiency and waste reduction measures.
Students want to find out from real professionals, who they are and what they do on a day to day basis, both individually and as a team, said Alison Watson, founder and CEO of Class Of Your Own.
