Sheikh Mohammed reviews RTA projects for Dubai

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has praised the infrastructure projects being implemented by the local Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to achieve its 2030 strategy.

Speaking during a visit to the RTA’s head office, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the efforts of the RTA’s engineers, technicians and managers as being crucial to the Dubai Strategic Comprehensive Plan 2021, WAM reported.

“Each achievement scored in Dubai is an achievement for our beloved country and its successive generations,” he said while also calling for high quality and timely delivery, especially on projects related to the upcoming Expo 2020.

With Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Authority and Saeed Suleiman, Director-General of Protocol and Hospitality in Dubai also in attendance, RTA staff demonstrated the traffic and transport plan for Dubai until 2030.

This demonstration also touched upon a number of key projects in Dubai, including Shindagha Crossing, which has been designed to become a landmark project for the city.

Sheikh Mohammed was also briefed on the details of the RTA’s five-year plan (from 2017-2021) to pave internal roads for 16 residential districts in Dubai.

Furthermore, the team also presented plans about the entrances and exits for the Jewel of the Creek project, which include the construction of a pedestrian bridge on Baniyas road and the intersection between Jebel Ali and Qudra streets, as well as a flyover bridge for bicycles.

Sheikh Mohammed was also briefed about the project designs for shipping docks on both the Dubai Water Canal and Commercial Bay. According to a report by Khaleej Times, he chose a design that matched local regional architecture which would provide tinted shade to serve pedestrians and users of public transport.

Also showcased was an expansion plan for the Burj Khalifa metro station in light of the surge in population numbers around the landmark, as well as an increase in the number of metro users. It is estimated that there were 6,000 passengers per hour in the month of January. The expansion of the metro station will see capacity increased to 180,000 passengers daily.

Sheikh Mohammed was also shown plans for a 120-metre long pedestrian bridge which will connect the Al Sufouh and Western street areas in JBR. Expected to be complete in 2017, the bridge will allow the free movement of pedestrians in different directions.
