Dragon Mart in Qatar is planning to open a 13,000sqm showroom dedicated to building materials and associated equipment, according to a senior official.

Logistics manager Yang Qi told local newspaper Gulf Times that the existing Dragon Mart in Doha’s Barwa Commercial Avenue has only 1,500sqm of space dedicated for building materials in its 21,000sqm of total area.

“Many companies are now looking for high-quality materials at reasonable prices for their various building projects across the country,” Gulf Times quoted Qi as saying. “We are expecting more Chinese businessmen and traders to come to Qatar in the coming months.”

Qatar’s market had huge potential, especially with projects for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in full swing, he added. Many companies already have shops in Dubai’s 150,000sqm Dragon Mart and now plan to open new shops in Qatar.

“Some investors may come directly from China but it is easier for those in Dubai to come to Qatar,” Qi pointed out.

He said Dragon Mart Doha’s occupancy stood at 95% and sales continued to improve. Around 140 shops occupy the mezzanine floor of the complex while some 170 are located on the ground floor. A warehouse is also being planned to store various items, particularly building materials, decorations and fixtures. Dragon Mart will also open a 1,000-capacity underground parking this year once all shops are operating, adding to the existing 400, he added.
