RTA to undertake Transit Oriented Development
The project is aimed to raise the efficiency and users of mass transit systems through re-planning of districts around the metro stations,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA.
UAE’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced its plan to build towers above the Union metro station. Tenders will be released for the construction of the towers, featuring shops, restaurants, offices and residences in partnership with a private company.
“The project is aimed to raise the efficiency and users of mass transit systems through re-planning of districts around the metro stations,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA. “It focuses on providing high-class residential and office environment characterised by pedestrian-friendly roads, greens, vital utilities, retail outlets among others.”
The RTA will study transit-oriented communities and adapt them to suit local and regional conditions in the duration of the project.
“The Union Square Project will be first Transit Oriented Development (TOD) destination in the region and a landmark destination for the residents and visitors of Dubai. The TOD concept has many success stories in Europe, Asia and America, bringing benefits to the communities, regenerating areas and creating positive commercial impact for those districts,” Al Tayer said.
“TOD provides low cost transit networks and services which will enable the residents to move around smoothly in various Dubai districts besides raising the return on investment from transit projects undertaken by the government,” he added, as per a report by Khaleej Times.
