Sharjah Ruler orders high-rise protection committee
Responsibilities include revising and updating current public protection provisions and issuing safety certificates
The Ruler of Sharjah, HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, announced on Wednesday that he had passed a resolution forming a permanent committee for the public protection requirements in high rise buildings.
According to the resolution, the committee has been tasked with revising and updating the current provisions pertaining to public protection and safety in high rise buildings. This includes installations such as elevators, fire alarms and other potential hazards to residents.
Chaired by the director general of the Sharjah Municipality, the committee will have members of the Sharjah Police, Civil Defence and other entities recommended by the emirate’s Executive Council.
Part of its responsibilities also includes issuing Certificates of Fitness to high rise buildings. These certificates will need to be renewed annually by building owners, following extensive inspections.
In a related move, HH Dr Sheikh Sultan also issued a resolution establishing and forming a permanent committee for the classification and evaluation of construction contracting and sub-contracting companies operating in the Emirate.
This committee will also be chaired by the director general of Sharjah Municipality. Other members include directors of other municipality divisions in Sharjah and representatives of entities recommended by the Executive Council.
