Huge fire engulfs residential tower in Ajman, UAE
Efforts to control blaze continued into early hours of Tuesday morning
A huge fire broke out in a high-rise residential tower in Ajman, UAE, on Monday night.
There were not immediately any reports of casualties, according to local media.
Firefighters were working to control the blaze into the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to the UAE state news agency WAM.
Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the UAE, and Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, oversaw the efforts by the civil defence to put out the fire.
The fire reportedly broke out in a tower complex in Ajman’s Al Sawan area at around 9pm. Some reports suggested the blaze was spread to an adjacent tower by strong winds.
The incident in Ajman is the latest in a series of fires at high-rise towers in the UAE, amid ongoing concerns over the quality of materials used in some buildings in the country.
In Dubai a major fire hit The Address Downtown hotel on New Year’s Eve, in a blaze police said was caused by an electrical fault.
A UAE-wide series of building inspections was ordered following the incident, in an attempt to ensure fire safety across the country.
Earlier in 2015, a huge fire hit The Torch building in Dubai, which also led to questions being raised over the façade material used.
