Dubai set to break new records with world’s tallest residential tower
Planned 711m-tall tower to be part of Meydan One development, which will also include world’s longest indoor ski slope
Dubai is looking to break more records with its latest megaproject, which is set to include the world’s tallest residential tower, longest indoor ski slope and largest dancing fountain.
The Meydan City Corporation on Monday said it will build the 711m-tall Dubai One Tower as part of a 3.67 million square-metre development that will include 885 residential apartments, a 350-room hotel and marina yacht club.
Apart from being the tallest residential tower, the project is set to clinch records for having the world’s highest sky restaurant, at 675m. Its planned 360-degree observation deck, at 655m in the air, is set to be higher than that at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
The wider Meydan One development will house over 78,300 residents, and include the Meydan One Mall, a 4km canal, a 100-berth marina and the world’s largest dancing fountain, it was announced.
The first phase of the development, located between Meydan and Al Khail Road, is slated for completion before 2020, according to state news agency WAM.
“In a city which never stops innovating, today’s announcement is significant for the future of Dubai and the UAE,” said Meydan chairman Saeed Humaid Al Tayer at the launch of the project.
“We have committed to developing a multi-use destination which will cater to every kind of person living and working here, as well as those who travel from around the world to visit. The first phase will be completed as Dubai prepares to host the World Expo 2020.”
The Meydan One Mall is set to feature a 150m x 80m retractable roof which will be opened in cooler months, it was announced. With a gross floor area of 5 million sqm, the mall will also host the world’s longest indoor ski slope at 1.2km, a 9km boardwalk, a beach, a civic plaza and a heritage village.
For sport enthusiasts, the mall will feature a 25,000sqm indoor multi-purpose sport facility as well as bicycle and jogging trails. Another record-breaking attraction will be the world’s largest dancing fountain, at over 420m long.
At the base of the ski slope in the mall will be the 8,000-capacity Meydan Arena, which will play host to sporting events, live concerts and theatrical shows. Outdoor sports options will include football pitches, mountain biking, walking and running trails, a skateboard park and a BMX park.
Meanwhile, the new civic plaza, which can host 60,000 people, will be home to a floating stage, fountains and a waterfall.
