Damac removes Trump name from Dubai golf site
Move apparently prompted by presidential candidate’s anti-Muslim remarks
Damac Properties has removed the Trump name from a $6 billion golf development in Dubai in an apparent response to the uproar over the U.S. presidential candidate’s comments about Muslims.
Trump’s image was removed from a billboard outside the construction site of the Akoya by Damac project, plans for which include a Trump-branded golf course, according to a Reuters report.
Damac also previously announced plans for a Trump World Golf Club, at another property called Akoya Oxygen.
The Dubai-listed developer initially said its agreement with the Trump Organisation remains in place, although the removal of the branding suggests it is distancing itself from the man himself.
A spokesman for the company declined to comment on why Trump’s image had been removed when contacted by Reuters.
Trump last week called for a “total and complete shutdown” of US borders to Muslims, in the wake of the terrorist attack in the Californian city of San Bernardino.
The former reality TV star and real estate mogul has made several controversial remarks over the last few months, as the Republican Party gears up to nominate its 2016 presidential candidate.
Many of his comments have drawn criticism globally, with a petition for Trump to be banned from the UK having surpassed 500,000 signatures. Dubai’s Landmark Group reportedly suspended sales of Trump-branded goods in the wake of the anti-Muslim comments.
The Damac Properties agreement with the Trump Organisation was announced in 2013, as the first in a series of similar agreements.
