Thousands of companies could be blocked from trading
Thousands of contractors and engineering consultancies could lose their commercial licences to trade in Abu Dhabi as they have failed to implement the Department of Economic Development’s new classification system ahead of November’s deadline.
The Department of Economic Development (DED) revealed that only a fraction of offices registered in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region have completed their classification programme during this week’s InterMat Middle East.
From 21 November, 2012, companies that fail to implement the DED’s classification procedures will face a number of measures including being unable to renew their commercial licenses. Criteria for classification includes asset values, the number of qualified engineers, financial status, quality of work and adherence to safety standards.
Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Burkani, performance development advisor-contractor and consultant classification at the DED said that only 80 consultants out of 1,066 were now certified in Abu Dhabi. Out of 6,686 contractors in the capital only 1,890 have so far complied.
