Etihad Rail, the master developer and operator of the UAE’s national railway network, announced on Tuesday that it had signed an agreement with Sharjah Cement Factory for Stage Three of the railway network.
The memorandum of understanding signed between the two firms will see the Sharjah manufacturer use the network for the efficient transport of basic raw materials and cement to its customers throughout the UAE, making it the first prospective customer for Stage Three, a report by Gulf News said.
It is estimated that more than five million metric tonnes of cargo will be shifted per year, a volume that matches more than half of the factory’s existing logistics needs.
The agreement will also offer Sharjah Cement Factory a logistics solution that will give it a competitive edge by reducing its transport costs and improving its efficiency by allowing it access to a transport that is both safer and more environmentally friendly than trucks.
