UAE’s Khalifa Foundation to build $100mn power plant in Yemen
The agreement is part of the continuous programme implemented by the UAE in support of the power sector in Aden, Yemen
The UAE has signed an agreement with Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy to develop a 120MW power plant worth $100 million in Aden which will provide power to about 2.5 million people in Yemen. The UAE’s Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation will supply, install, and operate the gas turbine plant and its associated power network.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, the Minister of Federal Supreme Council at the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Vice President of the Khalifa Foundation, and Dr Najeeb Al-Awaj, Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation. Dr Moeen Abdulmalik, Yemeni Prime Minister, and Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, attended the signing ceremony, as well, according to state-owned news organisation WAM.
The agreement was made in accordance with the directives of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and with the support of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and HH Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Foundation.
While speaking with WAM, Al Zaabi stressed about the deep connection between the UAE and Yemen while, Dr Al-Awaj thanked the UAE leadership and the Khalifa Foundation for their support in various development and relief fields in Yemen.
Khalifa Foundation also mentioned that the power plant is expected to be operational by late 2019.
