$589mn expansion work on King Khalid International Airport in KSA begins
GACA: 14 new travel gates and 80 check-in counters being set up
The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has officially launched work on two international terminals at the King Khalid International Airport, at an investment of $589 million.
The project is part of the Riyadh Development Projects, which was launched by Saudi ruler, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in February 2019. GACA added that the scope of work will include preparation of the two terminals (3 and 4) and the expansion of the corridor connecting the two buildings to turn it into a passenger check-in area.
A statement added that the scope of work will include all electrical and mechanical systems, as well as special systems.
Furthermore, the expansion work will see 14 new travel gates and 80 check-in counters being set up, besides 30 counters for departure and 48 counters for passport control. Furthermore, the terminals will have a baggage claim area with eight 658m-long conveyor belts.
In addition, the terminal will also include a commercial space and first and business class lounges. GACA said that these will come up over a 10,400sqm area. It added that the average number of workers on the project will be 650.
Once completed, the expanded airport will be able to accommodate 11 million passengers annually.
