DEWA awards contract worth $78.4mn to build two reservoirs
The reservoirs will have a combined capacity of 120 million gallons
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a contract worth $78.4 million to construct two water reservoirs in Al Nakhali in the Hatta region, in Dubai. The reservoirs will have a capacity to hold 120 million gallons of desalinated water.
According to a statement from DEWA, these will be rectangular, reinforced, concrete 60 million reservoirs each, which will be able to increase Dubai’s water storage capacity to 1,010 million gallons.
Commenting on the project, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO, DEWA said: “This project supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and is in response to the continued growth in demand for water to meet the needs of ambitious urban, economic, and social projects, in line with DEWA’s strategy to provide water reservoirs.”
He also stated that it enhances the efficiency and reliability of the water network and increases water flow to fulfil the increasing demand for water across all of Dubai.
DEWA also mentioned that work is expected to proceed as per schedule, and the construction and operation of the reservoirs will be completed in two years.
Currently, DEWA’s water capacity is at 830 million gallons. Another 60 million reservoir which is being constructed in Al Lusaily, will increase the current capacity to 890 million gallons in two years. By this time construction of the two new reservoirs will also be completed, further increasing the reservoir capacity to 1010 million gallons.
