Oman’s Sohar-Al Ain railway first up
Decision to build railway line on a priority basis came after a request by the UAE
The Omani Ministry of Transport and Communications has announced that a 136km stretch of railway line connecting Sohar with the UAE border via Al Ain will be the first section of the Oman National Rail Project to be implemented.
The decision to build the Sohar-Al Ain line on a priority basis was agreed between Oman and the UAE, a ministry official told the Oman Daily Observer. A 27km spur line to Buraimi will also be part of this priority package, the official added.
“As requested by the UAE side, and as agreed by the Sultanate, construction of the Sohar-Buraimi-Al Ain section will receive priority attention during the implementation phase,” said the official.
“This section-and not the Sohar-Khatmat Malaha/Fujairah section, as envisaged under the UN ESCWA’s original rail map for the Arab Mashreq region, will be implemented first,” he said.
