Saudi-based Saline Water Conversion Company (SWCC) has awarded Pöyry a contract for the supervision of engineering, construction and commissioning of the Rabigh-Jeddah-Makkah Water Transmission project.

According to a statement from Pöyry, the transmission project is one of the largest transport systems for drinking water in the Kingdom. While the value of the contract has not been disclosed, the international consulting and engineering company says its scope of work includes the review of contractor’s engineering services, supervision of construction, erection and commissioning.

“Pöyry has a long-standing relationship with SWCC going back more than 30 years. As one of the world’s leading power engineering companies, Pöyry is proud to support SWCC in this important and vital project that will transport the required water needs to the people of Jeddah and Makkah,” explained Ari Asikainen, Pöyry’s head of Thermal Power and Renewable Energy in the Middle East.

Once complete, the infrastructure project will answer the growing demand for drinking water by the metropolitan areas of Jeddah and Makkah.

The firm currently provides a variety of services at the Ras Al Khair power and desalination plant, which is presently the largest power and water desalination plant in the world. The plant is said to convert more than one billion litres of seawater into potable water every day and is also operated by the SWCC.
