The main contractor for Qatar’s Al Bayt Stadium, the proposed venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, is due to start work next month, the tournament’s organising committee said.

Enabling works have been completed on the 60,000-seat stadium, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy said in a statement.

Salini Impregilo, in a joint venture with Qatari contractor Galfar Al Misnad – which is the Qatari arm of Oman’s Galfar Engineering – and Italy’s Cimolai, won the €770 million ($852.6 million) job as main contractor of the stadium, it was reported in July.

“The main contractor is due to begin work in September 2015, with completion due in 2018, well ahead of the competition. Other contractors on the site include Dar Al Handasah, the design consultant, and Projacs, the project manager,” the committee said.

The stadium is expected to host group, quarter-final and semi-final matches during the World Cup. It is located in the town of Al Khor, 30 miles north of Doha.

Accommodation to house up to 2,700 construction workers is currently being built at the site, the Supreme Committee said. The design and construction of the accommodation will be undertaken by Al Khor & Dakira Schemes & Services Co.

“We are progressing well at Al Khor and this new workers accommodation under construction is the latest sign of that development. The proposed design for the accommodation was reviewed by the Technical Delivery Office and the Workers Welfare Committee at the SC to ensure alignment with our standards,” said Ghanim Al Kuwari, executive director of competition venues. The under-construction precinct will also include retail areas and restaurants, it was reported.

Al Bayt is one of five stadiums currently under construction for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The others are Al Rayyan Stadium, Al Wakrah Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium and Qatar Foundation Stadium.
