Qatar Railways Company has announced the issue of a tender to appoint a project manager for the first phase of the country’s link to the GCC rail network.

The scope of the contract includes project, design and construction-services management, although no indication was given on when the contract would be awarded or what the value of the deal would be.

The first phase will constitute around 148 kilometers of freight and passenger line to Saudi Arabia’s border for the use of diesel locomotives, while passenger trains on this line will also be connected to Education City and the Doha Metro.

According to Qatar Rail, the freight service will continue to the industrial area of Mesaieed, while links to Bahrain and other industrial areas like Ras Laffan and Al Khor will be added at later stages.

Qatar has earmarked $30 billion to spend on rail projects, the second-largest budget in the region after Saudi Arabia’s.
