India’s L&T scoops $161m Riyadh Metro deal
The firm will construct tracks for Lines 1 and 2 of the $22.5bn rail project in Saudi Arabia
India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction has bagged a $161.37 million order for the construction of the tracks for Lines 1 and 2 of the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia.
According to a company statement, the company’s railway business unit won the order from the BACS consortium – which is made up of Bechtel, Almabani, CCC and Siemens – for the construction of the tracks on a design-and-build basis.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 40 months, L&T Construction said. It involves the construction of 62.86km of double ballastless tracks in tunnels, viaducts, at-grade sections and three depots.
“This order has been won against stiff international competition and is in sync with L&T’s strategy to expand their Railway Business into the Middle East,” the statement said.
The BACS consortium is responsible for designing and building Lines 1 and 2 of the Riyadh metro network. These two lines will form part of the six-line metro system that will run for a total length of 176km across the city and includes 85 stations. Line 1 will stretch from north to south through the centre of Riyadh, along the Olaya-Batha corridor, covering 38km. The line, much of which will be underground, will include 22 stations and four transfer stations where it will connect with other metro lines.
Meanwhile, Line 2 will run east to west along the King Abdullah Road and will be built mostly at grade (15km) with some elevated sections.
