Qatar’s public-works authority Ashghal has released a tender for the construction of a 750,000sqm zoo to replace the current facility in the capital city of Doha.
The contract value for the New Doha Zoo project is $63 million, and it will include three specific hotels for three designated theme areas – the Africa Safari Zone, an Asian Woodland Area and a South American Rainforest.
The new zoo, scheduled to be completed by 2017, will be seven times larger than the current facility, Ashghal said.
Aswan Trading and Contracting Company, a local firm, has been awarded a $12 million contract to carry out enabling and demolition works for the project, according to tender documents released by Ashghal. The contractor will prepare the site for main construction and also ensure the protection and maintenance of the trees and natural environment on-site during excavation works.
Medgulf Construction Company, another local company, has been awarded a $20 million contract for the design and construction of temporary housing facilities for the existing zoo’s animals in Rawdet Al Faras. This facility will house the animals until the new park is ready.
It also includes residences for caretakers and a veterinary clinic. Construction work is currently in progress, Ashghal said.
KEO International Consultants has been appointed as design consultant for the New Doha Zoo, while Mace International have been appointed as project managers. The Qatari offices of both firms will handle the project.
Other design consultants on the project include the US firms HHCP Design International and PJA Architects. The landscaping consultants are Consulting Engineering Group (CEG) – Qatar.
