A worker has died on the site of the under-construction Louvre Abu Dhabi, according to the master developer Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC).

The death, after an incident last month, is the first to have occurred on the site, the Abu Dhabi government’s development arm said.

“Since the unfortunate incident took place, the company’s main focus has been the worker’s family especially during this tough time,” the TDIC said in a statement to local media outlets.

“This is the first fatal incident on site and comes after more than 27 million hours logged to date with an average of 5,500 workers on site. The company is still working with its contractor and the relevant authorities to investigate how this unfortunate incident took place and to make sure that the necessary measures are taken accordingly,” the TDIC added.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi, due for completion late this year, is part of the wider Saadiyat Cultural District, which will also be home to the Zayed National Museum, due to open in 2016 and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, set to launch in 2017.
