The Qatar Railways Company has awarded the Louis Berger-Egis Rail joint venture a $79 million contract to provide project management consultancy services for all elevated and at-grade sections of the Doha Metro project.
The newly contracted sections include the Red Line North, Red Line South and Green Line, which have a combined length of about 16km. These sections of the upcoming rail network will provide a link to the FIFA stadiums being built for the World Cup 2022.
“We are honoured to play a key role in bringing Qatar Railways Company’s vision to build one of the world’s most impressive, extensive and modern metro programs to life,” said D. James Stamatis, president for Louis Berger’s international operations. “The Doha Metro will be a global model for transit programs providing greater access, connectivity and mobility to its citizens.”
The Louis Berger-Egis Rail joint venture was initially selected in August 2012 to provide project management services on the $36 billion Doha Metro, part of Qatar’s upcoming railway network. In 2013, the JV was also commissioned to provide independent certification engineer services, including early enabling works and utility diversions.
The 216 km-long Doha Metro will have over a 100 stations planned across four lines: Red, Green, Gold and Blue. Phase one of the Doha Metro is expected be launched in 2019.
Additionally, it was recently revealed that a five-member consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries had received a “letter of conditional acceptance” from Qatar Rail for a systems package for the Doha Metro, calling for the turnkey construction of a fully automated driverless metro system, according to a company statement.
