ABB to provide electrical solutions to boost capacity of Kuwaiti plant
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth $22 million to supply electrical equipment and power systems for the Az Zour South power plant upgrade project in Kuwait.
The project, expected to be completed by March 2012, is part of an expansion plan including the addition of 400 megawatts of generation capacity to the combined cycle power plant, located about 80 kilometres south of Kuwait city.
The main power plant contractor, Alghanim International General Trading and Contracting placed the order in response to the electricity demand in Kuwait, which has been growing steadily due to construction activity and a rising population.
“The additional capacity will help meet the growing need for power, especially during peak summer consumption periods,” said Franz Josef Mengede, head of ABB’s Power Generation sector, within the power systems division.
The project will also extend the 275 kilovolt gas-insulated switchgear substation, the medium and low voltage equipment, and the substation automation system.
ABB, which provides solutions for all types of power generation and water plants, will be responsible for the electrical balance of the plant, the distributed control system, the field instrumentation and the generator transformer.
The group which operates in around 100 countries enables utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.
