Saudi Arabia’s Haj Ministry has proposed setting up a company to build housing on the Mina mountains for pilgrims, it was reported.
To make room for more people in Mina during the pilgrimage, minister Bandar Hajjar has recommended establishing a state-owned company to develop holy sites and housing in the area, Arab News reported.
The proposal, which includes a mechanism to finance projects, has been presented to Prince Mohammed bin Naif, interior minister and chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee, it was reported.
Establishing the company will “increase the capacity of Mina” and solve problems like inadequate water and electricity supply, air-conditioning, and sewage services, Hajjar said, quoted in the report.
“I hope the government will establish the company quickly to embark on construction work in order to help millions of Muslims around the world… A good number of [Muslims] intend to perform hajj every year, but we cannot accommodate them due to the shortage of space at the holy sites and ongoing expansion work at the Grand Mosque in Makkah,” Mohammed Badahdah, assistant secretary-general of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth, told Arab News.
