A Bangladeshi worker has been killed following the collapse of scaffolding on an eight storey under construction residential building in Al Qusais, Dubai.
According to media reports, a temporary lift that was being used to transport iron rods and pipes capsized and fell on the scaffolding. The fatal accident also resulted in two construction workers being critically injured.
Major-general Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant-commander-in-chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation said that ‘prima face’ the fatalities and injuries looked to have been caused by the pipes and rods falling on workers standing below.
The injured – an Indian and a Pakistani – are believed to be in critical condition at a local hospital. Dubai Police said that three other workers sustained minor injuries and were treated onsite.
Major-general Al Mansouri added that initial reports suggested that the accident was caused by negligence onsite.
Earlier this year, two construction workers were killed in Sharjah after they fell from a building under construction on King Faisal Road.
In the wake of that accident, the Sharjah Police urged construction companies in the emirate to enforce onsite safety standards.
