Dubai will begin to charge per tonne for commercial and industrial waste by the first half of 2015, it was reported.

While 39 percent of waste generated in Dubai in the first half of 2014 came from the commercial sector, industrial, construction and domestic waste constituted the rest.

Waste from other Emirates charging for disposal was being dumped in Dubai, which currently does not have a tariff, said a senior municipality official quoted in Gulf News.

This has led to waste in Dubai almost doubling from 6,000 tonnes in 2008 to 11,500 tonnes three years later, said Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director of Dubai Municipality’s waste management department. Currently, the rate is a “normal” 7,000 tonnes per year, he added.

The official, however, declined to announce the planned tariff rate, it was reported.

“We’re not going to profit from the tariff, it’s the cost of handling the waste. We’re a public service, but there are overhead costs. This income will encourage us to invest in recycling or other waste management facilities,” he said, according to Gulf News.
