Construction of the Dubai Canal is expected to quicken after internal roads in Al Safa were recently closed off to prepare for work to commence.
The 3KM-long canal, announced in October last year, will run parallel to Safa Park, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Beach Road as it connects the extended Creek from Business Bay to Jumeirah Beach through Sheikh Zayed Road.
Ground-mapping and geo-scanning activities were undertaken last month. These involve searching for underground cables and pipelines, following which they will be relocated to allow for excavation to begin.
The canal will contribute to renewing the water of the entire Business Bay Canal automatically without any need for hydraulic pumps, it was earlier revealed. An extra flushing capacity will be added to the Dubai Creek when the Canal is connected to Business Bay, by approximately 250 million cubic meter per year.
As per a report by local daily Gulf News, a senior official revealed more streets in Al Safa will be closed over the next few days, and the traffic diversion plan will be published after preliminary work has been completed.
Additionally, efforts are being made to ensure traffic diversion from Al Safa does not affect its surrounding areas, said the senior official. “We will make sure the traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road and all the parallel roads are not affected. Proper alternative arrangements will be made before we begin digging,” he said.
