Limited permanent structures for Expo 2020

In the latest development on construction for the Dubai World Expo 2020, it has been revealed that the master-plan for the Expo site will be submitted to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the global body in-charge of the event, by the third quarter of 2015.

Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) management will be handling operations at the Expo site. Chris Scott, director of investment and development management at DWTC said Q3 2015 is the latest date for registering the plan with the BIE. “All of the finer details regarding the master-plan need to be finalised well before that to give us as much time as possible to test it out.

“Construction will start after the master-plan submission and validation, but the work on the Metro link may come about sooner,” Scott added.

138 of the 438 hectares of the Expo site will be used in the construction of infrastructure and other related services. “There will be very few permanent buildings built as part of the Expo 2020 – the idea is to not create white elephants,” Scott said, as per a report by local daily Gulf News. “The site will be used for a national museum once the event is over.”

There have been concerns in the market, since the Expo win was announced, regarding the value sustenance ability of the permanent structures that will be built for the event.
