Sydney Harbour Bridge to be replicated in India

Mamta Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal, one of India’s largest states, is reportedly keen on building a bridge as she seeks to develop capital city Kolkatta into a tourist hub.

“The process of construction has started and will be completed within a year,” said Khalil Ahmad, Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner as per a report by Gulf News. “The bridge is a part of the riverfront beautification undertaken by the state government, and will be an engineering marvel.”

Estimated to cost approximately $804K (Rs50mn), the 120m-long bridge is designed as a walkway for visitors to the Hooghly River. It will be built near Kolkata Eye, a ferris wheel that Banerjee has planned in an attempt to transform ‘Kolkata into a city similar to London’, added the report.
