A set of 19 warehouses and stores were destroyed by a fire in Sharjah’s Industrial Area 12 last night.

According to Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, director-general of Sharjah Civil Defense, no casualties were reported from the incident, which destroyed warehouses of auto spare parts, metal and aluminum equipment, furniture, garments and perfume and oil stores.

The Sharjah Civil Defense is investigating the cause of the fire, which supposedly started in one warehouse before spreading to the other buildings.

Labourers are believed to have evacuated the premises after trying to extinguish the fire with buckets of water, said a report by local daily Gulf News. Roads in the vicinity were also blocked off for safety purposes.

Firefighters from the civil defense headquarters, Dubai and Ajman cooperated with the Sharjah authorities in trying to extinguish the fire, which is expected to have started at 9 PM and continued late into the night. The cause of the fire is yet to be found.
