Dubai Police have announced that it intends to build a new museum to showcase the achievements of the police force since its inception in 1956 and to educate the public on how law and order is maintained.
The new building will be built in the shape of a policeman’s cap, said Major General Abdul Rahman Mohammed Rafei, director-general of the Department of Community Services at Dubai Police. It is likely that it will enter the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest policeman’s cap, he added.
The museum will be four storeys high and will overlook both Al Ittihad Road and Al Mulla Plaza. Its budget has been approved and preliminary plans are underway, a Gulf News report said.
Major General Rafei said that the museum would be built at Dubai Police’s headquarters, but will be positioned in a way that it complements Al Qiyadah Metro station and so that Metro passengers can see the museum as they pass.
The old museum holds a number of artefacts that were used by the Dubai Police as well as photographs. According to the newspaper report, there are a number of rare photographs documenting the various phases of Dubai Police – including photos of the first female police force.
Also on display are a number of weapons used and confiscated by the force, old uniforms and old telecommunications and radars. Information on how Dubai Police combats drug smuggling is also included.
The new museum will have all that and more, as the new building is significantly larger. Research halls will also be part of the building, where researchers working on papers related to Dubai Police can easily access information needed.
Major General Rafei said that the idea of the new museum came from Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamin, the Deputy Chairman of Police and General Security and the former Dubai Police Chief.
He added that Lieutenant General Dahi said that museums usually look traditional, but Dubai Police always look for new things and that is why he said he chose this ‘modern, unique design’.
Work on the old Dubai Police Museum began in 1985, and it was completed in 1987.
