Data carrier Etisalat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Etihad Rail to share best practices in communications network engineering and collaborate to develop a “unique” business model.
Among the strategies announced to date are network coverage for Etihad Rail and its customers and ICT solutions to assist Etihad in providing “safe, modern and efficient rail services”. Etisalat will use the UAE-wide railway infrastructure to reach areas not yet covered by its fibre-optic technology.
“At Etihad Rail, we aim to offer customised solutions to ambitious companies seeking greater efficiency, reliability and competitive advantage as well as an integrated railway network that serves the needs of our core customers: freight and Passengers,” said Etihad Rail executive director Shadi Malak.
In March Etihad Rail- formerly known as Union Rail- unveiled a new brand identity and finalised plans for the network; construction of phase one is due to begin by summer 2011. The will connect Shah, Habshan and Ruwais, with freight trains online by 2013, carrying granulated sulphur for export.
“We understand the significant role that telecommunications play in delivering the highest quality transportation services, and are excited to work with Etisalat to explore new opportunities and solutions that will directly impact our end users in a positive way,” Malak added.
The MOU was signed by Mr. Abdulla Hashim, Senior Vice President, Business Solutions at Etisalat and Mr. Richard Bowker, CEO at Etihad Rail, during the ongoing UITP conference and exhibition in Dubai.
