Jordanian Government initiates national BuildingSMART forum

“Fully functional and self-funding” group launched

An agreement has been signed to initiate BuildingSMART’s Jordan Forum.

The agreement between BuildingSMART MENA, BuildingSMART ME, BIM Journal and The Kingdom of Jordan’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) and Jordan Engineers Association (JEA) marks the creation of a “fully functional and self-funding forum for buildingSMART ME in Jordan”.

“Governments are recognising the tangible benefits of BIM. This agreement is a significant step forward for BuildingSMART ME in its pursuit of bringing internationally recognized standards for processes and technologies to help the region’s struggling construction industry,” said BuildingSMART ME president, Tahir Sharif.

Recently BuildingSMART ME released a GCC wide survey on ‘Building Information Modeling’ (BIM), in the GCC and Jordan construction industries, which found BIM penetration in the industry to be “moderate”, with 25% of respondents “familiar” with the process and only 5% utilising it.

Competency with systems was also classed as “under-developed” compared to Western European and US markets. A lack of skilled staff may also hinder adoption of BIM in future.

“The Jordanian construction industry will see significant improvements and cost of projects going down with the standards and best practices BuildingSMART ME will bring. As a non-profit and neutral organisation, we will continue to reach out to other Governments and decision makers across the region helping them realise the benefits of BIM,” added Sharif.

Other stakeholders involved in the formation of BuildingSMART Jordan Forum include Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), MID Contracting Company (MIDCC), El-Concorde Contracting Company (ECC) and Amman Consulting Office.
