Representatives from the labour ministries of the UAE and Egypt recently held a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss cooperation between their respective countries’ labour and manpower markets.

Saqr bin Ghobash Saeed Ghobash, Minister of Labour for the UAE met Nahed Al-Ashri, Egypt’s Minister of Manpower and Immigration while at the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva.

The officials are reported to have exchanged their experiences and views on the labour markets in their countries. While in Geneva, Ghobash also met the Moroccan Minister of Empowerment and Social Affairs, Abdul Salam Siddiqui.

The UAE was recently awarded two seats in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the period 2014 – 2017. Earlier this month, the assistant-undersecretary for labour affairs from UAE’s Ministry of Labour, Humaid bin Deemas Al Suwaidi said the GCC needs to develop “proper” communication channels to develop worker laws, relations and legislation in their respective countries.

In March 2014, the Saudi National Contractors Committee met with representatives from the Egyptian Union for Contractors in Riyadh, where the latter agreed to offer its services following the implementation of a ‘proper mechanism…to obtain visas’.

“Many Saudi contractors are utilising Egyptian expertise in technical work that do not require their presence at the site, especially as their services are reasonably priced,” a statement from the Saudi Committee said at the time.
