BUTEC awarded EPC contract for Casablanca WtE project
The facility is expected to generate 126MWe of baseload electricity and prevent up to 1t of CO2-equivalent emissions for every tonne of waste processed
BUTEC has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a Waste-to-Energy (WtE) project in Casablanca by a consortium comprising Nareva, Kanadevia Inova and Itochu. The consortium is delivering the project under a 33.5-year concession agreement with the Municipality of Casablanca.
Located northwest of the Mediouna landfill in Morocco’s Casablanca-Settat region, the incineration plant aims to process approximately 1.5m tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. The project aims to significantly reduce the region’s dependence on landfills, while recovering energy from waste. BUTEC is said to be partnering with Switzerland-based Kanadevia Inova, a global specialist in WtE and renewable gas technologies, to deliver the facility.
According to a statement, the facility is expected to generate 126MWe of baseload electricity and prevent up to 1t of CO2-equivalent emissions for every tonne of waste processed. The project will serve more than 4.2m people across Greater Casablanca, supporting Morocco’s wider energy transition and long-term decarbonisation objectives.
As per the EPC arrangement, Kanadevia Inova will provide the project’s WtE technology and process systems, alongside operations support, long-term maintenance and financing.
BUTEC will undertake civil works across the entire facility and lead the engineering, procurement and construction of non-process buildings, facilities and associated infrastructure. The company’s scope includes civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) works, as well as external infrastructure.

The project is said to be a major step toward a more sustainable and circular waste-management model for Casablanca and Morocco.
