The Centre of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi (CWM) won the Green Middle East Award for Environmental Excellence for ‘Natural Resource Conservation’ at the Green Middle East Awards 2013.
The inaugural awards, held as a part of the annual Green Middle East exhibition and conference awarded CWM for its C&D waste crushing plant project.
Attended by government officials, private sector companies and organisations involved in environment protection, recycling, waste collection and management, the event was held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and organised by the Ministry of Environment and Water in collaboration with the International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC).
Nominees for the award category were required to demonstrate proven practices of effective management in reducing carbon emissions including cutting them at source, and elaborate on their methods of dealing with materials and machinery to limit pollution and explaining the programs used in the measurement and control of carbon emissions.
CWM’s C&D waste crushing plant project in Al Ain specialises in destroying bulky construction material and buildings. The equipment at the plant also has the ability to process almost 2,000 tonnes of destroyed construction material waste. Following this demolition process, CWM siphons the recycled material for road works or for a second construction project. All crushed wood, iron and plastic material can also be recycled and re-used.
“Waste management focuses on reducing the rate of consumption of natural resources,” said Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, acting general manager of CWM.
“In this context, proper implementation of best practices to reduce and manage waste better requires the concerted efforts of all those responsible, whether the private sector or government for the reduction of waste at source, as well for the reuse and recycling of materials.”
CWM is the primary government authority responsible for all activities related to the development, collection, maintenance, transportation, operation and processing of waste in safe, efficient and economical ways throughout the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
