Qatar’s Central Municipal Council (CMC) has recommended companies do not allow all their workers a weekly day-off on Friday, sending a proposal for the same to the country’s Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.

Claiming over-crowding in areas of Doha on Fridays, the CMC  suggested companies give half their employees a the weekly day-off on Friday, and pick another day for the other half to take the same weekly day-off.

Member of House Mubarak Fraish, who led the discussion on this issue at the committee’s regular session earlier this week, said the huge crowds of low-income workers that gather in places such as Grand Hamdan Road on Fridays threaten the state of law & order and hygiene.

“Most of the workers throng Grand Hamad Street because it is close to exchange companies and commercial areas,” said the CMC.

Fraish further added these workers litter around the localities, placing added pressure on public cleaning services and can spread communicable diseases, claiming policing them becomes ‘necessary.’

The CMC urged the authorities to earmark specific places for their gathering on the weekends, as per a report by Qatar Living. The civic body also recommended that an old graveyard near the Grand Hamdan Mosque be developed and reserved exclusively for the low-income workers for their weekend gatherings, adding that one day of the week should be reserved for workers in public parks and on that day families should not be let in.
