Qatar’s Public Works Authority has announced a $12.3 billion plan to develop seven expressways, improve and develop existing roads and sewage projects, as part of a nation-wide development programme, which is expected to be completed over the next five to seven years.
One of the projects revealed was a highway dedicated to heavy vehicles, the announcement said. Ultimately, the expressway projects will involve 900km of roads, subways, flyovers and interchanges, which are all part of the road infrastructure scheme that will connect Doha with other parts of the country.
The PWA said that 240 major interchanges will be built, ranging from conventional traffic lights to multi-level interchanges with tunnels and flyovers. The expressway and road projects will also involve the development and repair of existing major roads.
Furthermore, the sewage plan will include 221 projects that are to be executed over the next five to seven years at a cost of $13.7 billion. The authority said that some projects would cost up to $52.92 million, while others would range between $52 million and $247 million. The major projects would cost in excess of that, the statement added.
Local companies were likely to be awarded 163 of the 221 project contracts, with their collective value reaching $3.15 billion. Joint venture companies would stand to get the lion’s share of the projects, which are estimated to be worth $11.45 billion.
